While Ayurveda is the science of life, for me sisterhood is its medicine. Culturally and in community, this is by and large the work of women, in the care of their communities and I'm so honoured to step into this work in a meaningful way.
As a child, before I could walk I began receiving regular abhyanga oil massages from my mother, though we called it 'malish-palish', a tradition I continue today with my own son. When we would visit India in the summers we would grab the oil bottle and follow my Nani (maternal grandmother) around hoping she would would anoint us slathered with the nourishing oil, just like she did before her daily prayer each morning. As pre-teen and teen girls, my sister, cousin and I would have sleep overs, oil and braid our hair, cover our pillows with towels, then mix up a haldi face masks and pray the tumeric didn't stain our faces too much!
For me, this healing medicine of Ayurveda has always been rooted in community, and carried out by the matriarchs. This is the hands on work of my sisters and mothers.
I am called to study Ayurveda in India now because it is a return to the roots of healing, of lineage, of truth. For me, this is not simply study, but remembrance. At Kailash Yoga and Ayurveda, I honor the mountain as my guide: Steady, Rooted, and Timeless.
My journey into Ayurveda is an extension of this ethos : Walking the ancient path of my ancestors with humility, so that I may share practices that are not only timeless, historical and authentic, but they are fully alive. Here and now.
It is such an honor and privilege to step into the legacy of my feminine ancestry, and tap into age the old lineage of wisdom and healing.
