Healing Racism Through Yoga
Named for Mount Kailash, the radiant peak of the Himalayas. This sacred mountain has for millennia been revered in Hinduism as the dwelling place of Lord Shiva - Adi Yogi, The First Yogi, his wife the Goddess Parvati and their children the beloved elephant god Lord Ganesh and his brother, the fierce and witty warrior Lord Kartikeya.
In Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism and more Mount Kailash is the central still point of the Universe, and the living symbol of balance, transformation, and liberation.
Yearly pilgrimages from across cultures and traditions come together to circumnavigate Mount Kailash, Tibet. This Sacred Mountain is not a climb to reach any summit, and in fact the peak cannot be reached.
Just like in yoga, the journey is eternal and the destination is simply a return to one's starting point with a deeper understanding than which you started.
The path around the sacred Mount Kailash is a constant reminder that some peaks should remain for the Gods, and some wisdom is meant to be eternally pursued.
It is from this spirit that Kailash Yoga & Ayurveda arises and was created: a space where practice is not just movement, but remembrance and reverence of the sacred roots of yoga, the medicine and science of Ayurveda, of breath as prayer, of movement as an offering.
Arpita Panday is a member of the Canadian - South Asian diaspora, and walks with the intertwined roots of North India and Zanzibar, Africa, carrying the bone deep memory of South Asian and African shores.
As the Founder & Owner of Kailash Yoga and Ayurveda, she weaves together her South Asian roots, ties to Africa, forty plus years of personal yoga practice, and over a decade of work as a Work BC Certified Career Development Practitioner. After over a decade in the Employment Advising arena, and 5 years working inside Provincial Government, she turned toward Yoga as the path to healing racism, returning home to Hinduism and to the practices that carried her through 7 years of infertility, IVF including Egg donor IVF, motherhood, marriage, and thriving beyond divorce.
Arpita’s teaching centers Yoga as liberation grounded in Vedic lineage accessible to all, and a homecoming for South Asian and African diaspora. Through Yoga and Ayurveda, she continually endeavors to create spaces for healing, equity, and transformation.
